Greetings and welcome to the inaugural post on what is sure to be an extremely popular and culturally-relevant website. My name is Max Ehrlich, an electrical engineer with 6 years of experience in the defense industry, and I plan on using this site as a portfolio for my various projects – mostly for myself – but possibly for future potential employers or to share some open-source info with other engineers/creators/makers.
I am a man with many hobbies, often inspired by the desire to overcome an obstacle, make something in my life easier, or just an interest in learning more about a specific topic. I find myself falling into rabbit holes quite often. Often these are spurred on by relevant projects at work where I am dabbling in something that I’m not familiar with and need to learn more to complete the job or want to learn more to make my job easier. Other times I may be motivated by sheer laziness or pure boredom.
One of the first projects that I ever made was a simple text based game that I made back in college as a joke to make my roommate laugh. It was stupid, simple, and full of vulgar language. It wasn’t an impressive game, but it was a lot of fun writing it, and I learned a good bit about coding as a result.
A more recent example is an excel spreadsheet that I made at my first engineering job. The job was miserable and I spent a lot of time without actual work to do. In my free time, I thought of all the things I could be doing instead, which motivated me to leave as soon as I possibly could each day.
They had a clock-in/out system which rounded your time in the office to the nearest 6 minute interval. After I clocked in, I would take note of the time and input it into my little program. It would spit out the exact time I was able to leave while still getting my mandatory 8 hours of work time per day, but not a minute more. It also had some other functionality like tracking my time over the course of the week, tracking my PTO accrual, etc. But the reason I started it in the first place was a mix of boredom and efficiency.
Hopefully that gives you some insight into who I am as a person and as an engineer, and I also hope that you enjoy my future posts and projects.
